Punjab: Mohali reports first covid case amid surge in infections across country
PTC News Desk: As the country is witnessing a significant surge in the number of covid cases, the first infection has been reported in Punjab's Mohali district. After a long period of minimum existence, Covid-19 is emergng again with infections being reported in several urban centres across India.
This has prompted a series of precautionary measures by states and Union Territories, including Delhi, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh, with hospitals now placed on alert.
According to the reports, the infected individual was admitted to a private hospital in Mohali for the treatment of other underlying cause. However her test came positive for Covid-19.
The fresh cases in the district has prompted authorities to accelarate surveillance and close monitoring of the infections along with rapid testing. All the district hospitals and medical colleges have been told to increase testing and ensure sufficient beds and oxygen cylinders.
The recent surge in cases is being attributed to the spread of the JN.1 variant, a sub-lineage of the Omicron strain. Although not yet classified as a Variant of Concern (VOC) by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the variant has shown active transmission patterns across South Asia. Health experts have indicated that symptoms are generally mild, and infected individuals typically recover within four days. Common symptoms include fever, sore throat, runny nose, fatigue, headaches, and exhaustion.
