Punjab Police cancels leaves for all officials until Panchayat elections
PTC Web Desk: In a significant move to ensure peaceful conduct of the upcoming Panchayat elections, the Punjab Police Department has announced a ban on leave for all police officials and personnel until October 15. Leave will only be granted under exceptional circumstances, and strict action will be taken against those violating this directive.
With over 80,000 police personnel in the Punjab Police force, the department is preparing for elections that will take place across 13,937 village panchayats in the state. On October 15, a total of 1.33 crore voters are expected to cast their ballots, with 96,000 police personnel deployed for election duty.
The Punjab Government faces the challenge of maintaining a peaceful environment during the elections. To prevent any disturbances in the villages, the government has implemented measures to ensure smooth proceedings. A proposal to prohibit elections based on party symbols was passed in the Assembly. Despite these efforts, tensions have reportedly arisen in certain areas.
A control room has been established by the State Election Commission at its office located in Chandigarh, specifically for the Panchayat elections. This control room will operate daily from 8.30 am to 9 pm to address public grievances. Citizens can reach the control room by calling the landline number 0172-2771326, and additional information has been uploaded on the department's website for public access.
