Punjab Rajya Sabha poll: Navneet Chaturvedi's nomination rejected over forgery charges
PTC News Desk: The nomination papers of Navneet Chaturvedi, who had filed nominations for Punjab Rajya Sabha seat, have been rejected over forgery charges. A Jaipur resident, Chaturvedi now says he will challenge the decision to reject his nomination in the High Court.
Meanwhile, only two candidates remain in the race for the October 24 elections — AAP’s official nominee Rajinder Gupta and his wife Madhu Gupta, who is expected to withdraw her nomination on Wednesday.
The Chandigarh Police, who were providing security to Navneet Chaturvedi, moved him to safety before the Ropar Police could detain him, prompting the Ropar team to follow them to Chandigarh.
An FIR was registered against Chaturvedi late Monday evening by the Ropar Police, accusing him of forging the signatures of Ropar AAP MLA Dinesh Chadha. Ropar SSP Gulneet Singh Khurana confirmed the case, stating, “A police team from Ropar is in Chandigarh today to arrest him.”
Multiple FIRs have been filed by the Punjab Police over allegations that Chaturvedi forged the signatures of several AAP MLAs who were falsely shown as proposers supporting his Rajya Sabha bypoll nomination in Punjab.
The action followed complaints from the MLAs, who reported that their names and signatures were fraudulently used in nomination papers submitted by Chaturvedi, who claims to be the national president of the Janata Party.
Chaturvedi had filed two separate nominations for the Rajya Sabha seat — on October 6 and October 13. According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, the MLAs said they received messages and saw social media posts showing their names listed as proposers in Chaturvedi’s documents.
A handwritten list of proposers, allegedly bearing the forged signatures of the MLAs, was attached to the nomination papers and circulated online. The MLAs have denied ever signing or endorsing the nomination, asserting that their names and signatures were forged.
