Punjab: Stepfather 'kills' 9-year-old daughter in Sangrur; flees after crime

PTC Web Desk: In a tragic incident in Sangrur, a nine-year-old girl, identified as Maanvi, was allegedly murdered by her stepfather, Sandeep Goyal. According to the victim’s mother and grandparents, the accused did not like the girl and allegedly killed her because of his animosity towards her.

The victim’s grandmother said her daughter Neha had married Sandeep Goyal. Maanvi was Neha's daughter from her first marriage. On September 28, Sandeep had taken Maanvi for skating in the evening, but later that evening, when they returned home, the girl was found unconscious. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Sandeep fled the scene before he could be questioned.

The police have registered a case based on Neha’s statement, and a manhunt has been launched to locate Sandeep Goyal.

The girl's mother said her second husband, Sandeep, often expressed his dislike for Maanvi. He would frequently say that he wanted to live with Neha alone and that the child was an unwanted presence. On the evening of September 28, Sandeep took Maanvi out for skating, but when they didn’t return by 7 pm, Neha called him. He responded that they would be late as he needed to buy items for the child. Another hour passed, and Neha called again, to which Sandeep replied that they were still out and would be back soon.

Late in the evening, Sandeep called Neha, asking her to come downstairs, stating something was wrong with Maanvi. When Neha rushed downstairs, she found her daughter lying unconscious. Sandeep claimed that Maanvi had fallen ill after eating pizza. They took her to the hospital, from where Sandeep absconded.

The victim’s family claimed that this was not the first time Sandeep had tried to harm Maanvi. A couple of months earlier, Sandeep had allegedly attempted to poison her by putting something in her water bottle, which caused her to fall ill at school. At the time, the family dismissed it as an accident.

The police said a case had been registered against Sandeep Goyal under Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) based on Neha’s complaint. The girl’s body has been sent for a post-mortem.
