Punjab weather update: IMD warns of dust storms, squalls and thunderstorms till May 5; farmers at receiving end
Punjab Weather update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Chandigarh Centre, has issued a severe weather warning for several districts across Punjab, forecasting dust storms, thunderstorms, and high-velocity winds over the next few days. The alert remains in effect until May 5.
According to the IMD, wind speeds may range between 40 to 60 km/h, accompanied by lightning and dust storms. The situation could escalate to squall conditions in districts such as Patiala, Mohali, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot, with wind gusts potentially exceeding 80 km/h. These conditions pose a risk to crops, temporary housing structures, trees, and power lines. Residents are advised to stay alert and remain in safe indoor locations during the forecast period.
On May 1, dust storms and winds blowing at 20–30 km/h struck Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot, followed by rainfall. These weather changes brought relief from the heat, with a noticeable drop in temperatures recorded across the state. Although Punjab’s average maximum temperature remains 0.2°C below normal — within the standard seasonal range — intense heat still persists in some parts. The highest temperature was recorded in Bathinda at 41.2°C.
On May 2, there is normal weather in southern and eastern Punjab districts, but dusty winds are expected in other regions. On May 3 & 4, widespread thunderstorms, strong winds, lightning, and dust storms are likely in most districts. ON May 5, there would be a slight relief, though isolated districts may continue to experience dust storms.
The IMD also warns of potential damage to infrastructure and disruption of services due to strong winds and adverse weather events.
