Samana tipper accident: HC refuses interim relief to tipper owner; hearing adjourned to June 9
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has refused to grant any interim relief to Ranvir Singh, the owner of the tipper involved in the May 7 Samana road accident that killed seven school children and a driver. The court has adjourned the matter for further hearing on June 9, taking serious note of the gravity of the allegations and the public safety concerns involved.
In a detailed submission before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Punjab Government opposed the anticipatory bail plea filed by Ranvir Singh. The government informed the court that the tipper in question was unfit for operation, lacking insurance, a valid fitness certificate, a pollution certificate, and had not paid applicable road taxes.
The government also highlighted that Ranvir Singh has three existing FIRs against him, including a case related to illegal mining. The authorities also noted that the tipper’s driver had a history of rash driving, having been involved in a similar incident just a week prior to the fatal crash.
The state government presented a strong argument against any form of relief, stating: “This is a deeply serious case involving the death of seven innocent children. Given the repeated violations, the criminal background of the owner, and the absence of basic vehicle compliance, no leniency should be shown at this stage.”
Ranvir Singh, however, denied owning the vehicle, claiming he had been wrongly implicated. His legal counsel argued that the tipper does not belong to him and that he is being targeted without evidence. In contrast, the Punjab government submitted documentary evidence to establish that Singh had been using the tipper since 2023, directly linking him to the vehicle involved in the accident.
The High Court, while hearing the arguments, observed the seriousness of the case and chose not to grant any interim protection to the accused. Instead, it scheduled the next hearing for June 9, directing both sides to be prepared with all necessary records and arguments.
The accident in Samana, Patiala district, occurred when a speeding tipper truck collided with an Innova vehicle carrying school children, leading to the death of seven minors and the driver. The incident triggered massive public outrage and calls for stricter enforcement of transport laws.
