SIT clears Majithia’s counsel Bikramjit Singh Bath in FIR No 91; name dropped from case

PTC Web Desk: Advocate Bikramjit Singh Bath, counsel for senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, has been given a clean chit by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by the Punjab Police in connection with FIR No. 91 registered at Majitha police station.

The development came during the hearing of Bath’s anticipatory bail petition before a court in Amritsar, where the five-member SIT informed the court that no evidence had been found linking the advocate to any unlawful activity. The SIT further stated that Bath had visited the police station solely in his professional capacity as a lawyer to seek information and safeguard the legal rights of his client.

According to advocate Amanbir Singh Siali, the FIR was registered in connection with a case involving Akali worker Jobanpreet Singh. He said Bath had accompanied Jobanpreet Singh’s father to the Majitha police station for legal assistance and advice. Despite this, his name was included in the FIR, a move that drew strong opposition from the legal fraternity.

The inclusion of Bath’s name in the case prompted protests by members of the legal community. The Amritsar Bar Association staged demonstrations and observed a strike, while the matter was also taken up by the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana and the Bar Council of India.

During the court proceedings, the SIT clarified that Bath had acted in accordance with his professional duties and had not been involved in any illegal act. Following the submission, the court accepted the SIT’s position, leading to the removal of Bath’s name from FIR No. 91. His anticipatory bail petition was subsequently disposed of.

Reacting to the development, advocate Amanbir Singh Siali described it as a victory for the legal profession and said the outcome reflected the strength and unity of the legal community in defending the rights and independence of advocates performing their professional responsibilities.
