Raj Bala Malik of BJP is 24th Mayor of Chandigarh

Raj Bala Malik of BJP is the 24th Mayor of Chandigarh as she got 22 votes in 27-member House on Friday. Raj Bala Malik was up against Gurbax Rawat of the Congress party. Malik was in the Congress party initially. She was the mayor from Congress in 2012 and later in 2014, she left the party and joined the BJP. Raj Bala Malik has been elected for one-year tenure. She got 22 votes while Rawat bagged just five. Malik's contender Rawat, who has remained a deputy mayor, represents the Ward No. 9 (Sectors 39 and 40). Although, there was a fear of cross-voting by the BJP councillors, but it did not happened. Therefore, this would be her second tenure as Chandigarh mayor but first from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Malik, a lawyer, is married to RK Malik, a senior advocate in the Punjab and Haryana high court. After the election, Raj Bala Malik thanked all the party councillors and stated that her priority will be to upgrade Chandigarh’s old sewerage and water lines. To this, Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher said that "Congress was misleading as there was no need for any BJP councillor to do it."
