Chrome’s 'tracking protection' disables cookies for 30mn today

PTC News Desk: Google's initiative to introduce 'Tracking Protection' through Chrome involves turning off cookies today for around 30 million users, a move announced in December impacting 1 per cent of Chrome's user base.

Cookies, data snippets that track browsing behavior and preferences, often personalise user experiences on websites by displaying tailored ads and products. However, concerns about these third-party cookies, including potential access to personal data and browser slowdowns, prompted Google's decision.

The 'Tracking Protection' feature, replacing third-party cookies, aims to enhance user privacy by automatically blocking these cookies, restricting other websites from monitoring users' online activities. This initial rollout marks Google's step towards a broader plan to eliminate cookies for all Chrome users by 2024, acknowledging the challenges posed by advertising as a vital revenue stream. The company's long-term strategy seeks a balance between safeguarding user privacy and maintaining essential advertising functionalities.

Google's tracking protection and Ad topics

Google has rolled out Tracking Protection, a feature designed to thwart third-party website cookies, benefiting 30 million Chrome users on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS starting January 4. This move aims to curb cross-site tracking, enhancing user privacy across various devices.

Despite the cookie blockade, Google acknowledges the necessity of advertising. To maintain relevant ads without relying on third-party cookies, they're introducing Ad Topics. This approach utilises your recent Chrome browsing to identify interest "topics," aiding in displaying pertinent ads. Ad Topics operates by analysing your search history within a specific timeframe, an alternative to permitting third-party cookies for tracking browsing data. This method enables Google to locally identify your interests, offering tailored ad experiences without relying on traditional cookie-based tracking.
