New WhatsApp scam to the fore; know how to prevent falling to cyber frauds

PTC Web Desk: A new scam has come to the fore wherein people are complaining of getting WhatsApp calls and texts from unknown international numbers. The sender pretends to be company's HR representative and offers a part-time job to like YouTube videos.

The calls are being made with numbers starting from 84 (Vietnam country code), 62 (Indonesia) and 223 (Mali). Notably, WhatsApp has become a hub for spam calls. Earlier, such scams were being done through SMS, wherein people would be directed towards certain websites. However, cyber criminals have now switched to WhatsApp and are taking to social media to rob people.

In the recent scam, fraudsters are sending messages to people posing as company's HR representatives. They are offering money for linking certain YouTube videos. However, if someone falls prey to their tricks, they can end up losing their hard-earned money.

Here are some tips to prevent falling for WhatsApp scams:

Be wary of unsolicited messages: Be cautious of messages you receive from unknown numbers, especially if they are offering you something that seems too good to be true.

Verify the source: If you receive a message from a known contact, verify with them if they actually sent the message before clicking on any links or replying to the message.

Avoid sharing personal information: Do not share any personal information like bank account details, passwords, or any other sensitive information with anyone over WhatsApp.

Don't click on suspicious links: Avoid clicking on links from unknown sources, especially those that promise freebies or rewards.

Enable two-factor authentication: Enable two-factor authentication for your WhatsApp account to make it more secure.

Keep your app updated: Keep your WhatsApp app updated to ensure that you have the latest security features and fixes.

Use antivirus software: Install antivirus software on your mobile device to protect against malware and other malicious software that could be used to scam you on WhatsApp.

By following these tips, you can reduce the likelihood of being scammed on Whatsapp. Always remember to be cautious and suspicious of messages that seem too good to be true.
