Sensex climbs 657 pts, Nifty closes at 17,463

Mumbai, February 9: The Indian equities market's benchmark Sensex jumped 657 points on Wednesday, driven by strong buying support in auto, IT, banking and financial stocks amid positive cues from the global markets. Maruti Suzuki's stock increased by 4.14 percent to Rs 8951.55, while IndusInd Bank increased by more than 3%. HDFC Bank rose by 2.5 percent. The 30-stock S&P BSE Sensex closed the day at 58,465.97 points, up 657.39 points or 1.14 percent from the previous day's close at 57,808.58 points. Sensex, Nifty end in positive The benchmark index is up for the second day in a row. On Tuesday, the Sensex had gained 187.39 points. On Tuesday, the Nifty rallied 53.15 points. Sensex, Nifty end in positive Meanwhile, the banking and financial stocks witnessed strong buying support. IndusInd Bank's stock jumped 3.02 percent to Rs 965.55, while the stock of HDFC Bank increased by 2.50 percent to Rs 1497.70. The stock of Bajaj Finserv climbed 1.77 percent to Rs 16258.25 and ICICI Bank ended the day at Rs 802.70, up 1.26 percent. Reliance Industries, the index's heavyweight, closed 1.20 percent higher at Rs 2383.95. IT equities also saw a lot of buying support. HCL Technologies rose 1.66 percent to Rs 1181.55. Wipro gained 1.63 percent to Rs 569.10. Sensex, Nifty end in positive Tech Mahindra soared 1.49 percent to Rs 1454.10. Infosys ended the day 1.22 percent higher at Rs 1737.50. Just three of the 30 scrips that are part of the Sensex closed in the red. Sun Pharma dropped 0.72 per cent to Rs 887.40, while ITC and Power Grid Corporation also closed in the negative.
