Asian Wrestling C'ships 2023: India finishes tournament with 14 medals

Astana (Kazakhstan), April 15: Anirudh Kumar won the bronze medal on the final day of the Asian Wrestling Championships 2023 in Astana, Kazakhstan, on Friday, giving India a total of 14 medals.

Anirudh won 12-2 by technical superiority in his match against Uzbekistan's Sardorbek Kholmatov in the 125kg men's freestyle category. Indian wrestlers finished with one gold, three silvers, and ten bronze medals.


Aman Sehrawat won gold for the country in the men's 57kg freestyle category, while Rupin (Greco-Roman 55kg), Antim Panghal (women's 53kg freestyle), and Nisha Dahiya (women's 68 kg freestyle) won silver.

Other wrestlers who have won bronze in Asian Wrestling Championships for India are Deepak Mirka (men's 79kg freestyle), Neeraj Chikara (Greco-Roman 63kg), Sunil Kumar (Greco-Roman 87kg), Vikas (Greco-Roman 72kg), Anshu Malik (women's 57kg freestyle), Sonam Malik (women's 62kg freestyle), Manisha (women's 65kg freestyle), Reetika Hooda (women's 72kg freestyle) and Priya (women's 76 kg freestyle).

Anirudh had previously defeated Japan's Taiki Yamamoto 8-2 in the qualification round. However, he was defeated 2-0 in the quarter-finals by Kazakhstan's 125kg men's freestyle category finalist Yusup Batirmurzaev.

Aside from Anirudh, no other wrestler advanced to the medal round of the Asian Wrestling Championships on the final day.

Deepak Punia, a Commonwealth Games medalist, completed his campaign empty-handed in the Asian Wrestling Championships, losing to Bahrain's Magomed Sharipov in the 92kg freestyle quarter-finals.
