It was a heartbreaking day for Gukesh, who, despite being in a tough position against 2018 Norway Chess Champion Fabiano Caruana, attempted a late comeback. However, as the clock wound down, the Indian grandmaster ran out of time and instantly realized his hopes were dashed. With just two seconds remaining, Gukesh extended a handshake in resignation and then buried his face in his hands in frustration.
Defending champion Magnus Carlsen wrapped up the tournament with 16 points after managing a draw from a difficult position against fellow Indian player Arjun Erigaisi.
Caruana secured second place with 15.5 points, while Gukesh finished third—matching his previous best in the Norway Chess tournament—with 14.5 points. Erigaisi placed fifth with 12.5 points.
In the women’s event, Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk, a two-time world blitz champion and overnight leader, clinched the title with 16.5 points, despite losing an Armageddon tiebreak to India’s R. Vaishali in the final round.
