IPL 2025 meeting: Shah Rukh Khan, Ness Wadia indulge in heated argument over retention policy

PTC Web Desk: At a recent meeting held by the BCCI with Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners, a heated argument erupted between Kolkata Knight Riders co-owner Shah Rukh Khan and Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia over the retention policy and the number of Right to Match (RTM) cards allowed for the upcoming mega auction ahead of IPL 2025.

The BCCI issued a statement on Wednesday confirming a 'productive dialogue' with team owners regarding preparations for IPL 2025. The IPL governing council will review the key discussion points from the meeting before making a final decision. Although the meeting did not produce any definitive outcomes, the BCCI acknowledged the team owners' concerns about critical issues leading up to the next season.

The mega auction, scheduled before the IPL 2025 season, has faced opposition from several team owners who argue for the importance of maintaining a stable roster and rewarding the development of young talent. Various topics were debated, including the necessity of a mega auction, retention policy, and the Impact Player rule. It is learnt that Shah Rukh Khan strongly opposed the mega auction, advocating for significant retentions, which led to a heated exchange with Ness Wadia, who preferred fewer retentions.

Notable attendees at the meeting included Shah Rukh Khan (Kolkata Knight Riders), Kavya Maran (Sunrisers Hyderabad), Ness Wadia (Punjab Kings), Sanjiv Goenka and his son Shashwat (Lucknow Super Giants), KK Grand and Parth Jindal (Delhi Capitals), Manoj Badale and Ranjit Barthakur (Rajasthan Royals), Prathamesh Mishra (Royal Challengers Bangalore), Kasi Viswanathan and Rupa Gurunath (Chennai Super Kings), Amit Soni (Gujarat Titans), and online participants from the Mumbai Indians' ownership.
