Shubman Gill heads to Ahmedabad, uncertain for Pakistan match
New Delhi, October 11: Shubman Gill, the talented Indian opener, is making a steady recovery from a recent bout of dengue fever. While he is scheduled to arrive in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, his availability for the much-anticipated World Cup clash against Pakistan on Saturday remains in doubt.
As Gill prepares to join his team in Ahmedabad, his fellow teammates are engaged in a battle against Afghanistan at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. A BCCI source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated, "Gill is doing absolutely fine and is set to leave Chennai for Ahmedabad today. It is still not clear whether Gill will have a light training session at Motera on Thursday. His recovery has been fine but we can't really be sure if he can play against Pakistan."
Shubman Gill had already missed the first two World Cup matches, the opener against Australia in Chennai, and Wednesday's game against Afghanistan. His platelet count had dropped to 70,000 last week, necessitating his admission to a Chennai hospital for routine medical tests. Fortunately, he was discharged after 24 hours.
While Gill is known for his remarkable fitness, dengue can significantly weaken the body. There is a perspective that even if he is 70 percent fit, he might be more effective than a flashy player like Ishan Kishan. However, it would be more prudent to ensure that Gill is fully recovered, reaching 100 percent fitness before considering his return to the team, particularly with an eye on the Bangladesh game.
Gill's presence in the lineup has been eagerly anticipated, and fans and the team will be hoping for his swift recovery to bolster the squad's performance in the upcoming matches.
