Sikh youth Harjas Singh earns spot in Australia's Under-19 squad

PTC News Desk: Cricket is a sport that evokes a thousand emotions. Every year, one as a fan of a particular team or player, witnesses some memorable wins and some memorable losses. On one corner, a team or players falls from grace, while on the other side, one makes a miraculous comeback remembered for ages. Similar is the inspirational story of Sikh youth Harjas Singh.

Coming from a Sikh background, it was not easy for Harjas Singh to make in Australia’s U-19 men’s squad but this youth has become an inspiration for several Punjabis and Sikh youth. 


18-year-old Sikh youth Harjas Singh a left-handed batsman from India has earned a spot in Australia's U-19 men's squad.

Harjas Singh cricket journey

Recalling his early innings at the age of seven, the teenager said that he was introduced to the world of cricket with a wooden plank that he used as a bat and a tennis ball instead of a leather one.

Singh's introduction to professional cricket began at the age of eight, where he started playing as a substitute player at the local Revesby Workers Cricket Club. Impressed by his game, Neil D’Costa became his mentor and trained him to become a professional cricketer. 

Harjas Singh's hardworking approach and dedication to cricket have earned him a spot in Australia's U-19 men's squad. His passion for the game and unwavering support from his parents have helped him achieve this prestigious recognition.

"The opportunities that came my way have given me a lot of exposure and chance to learn from my peers and seniors," Harjas Singh said.

How Harjas Singh is unique in Australian team ?

Harjas Singh’s sikh appearance gave him the unique identity in the Australian team. His hardwork, constant dedication and being the youngest player makes him different from the Australian squad. 

In an interview, he expressed his gratitude towards his parents and said, “My parents sacrificed all their free time to ensure I got proper training. They spent hours and a lot of their savings to help shape my career.”

Meanwhile, General Secretary of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee s. Jagdip Singh Kahlon also took to his Twitter handle to congratulate Sikh youth. He wrote, “I extend my warmest congratulations to #HarjasSingh for becoming a member of #Australia's Under-19 team, which is a remarkable feat. I'm excited to see him make significant strides in his cricketing journey in the future. ALL THE BEST HARJAS SINGH..”
