Wimbledon 2023: Djokovic, aiming for his 24th Grand Slam title and an eighth Wimbledon championship, faced off against the formidable World No. 1, Carlos Alcaraz, on a fateful Sunday. In an enthralling five-set battle, the young Spanish player proved to be Djokovic's toughest challenge yet. Ultimately, it was Alcaraz who emerged as the victor, securing his maiden Grand Slam title and putting an end to Djokovic's dominance at Wimbledon.

But who exactly is Carlos Alcaraz, the player dubbed the "Spanish Bull" by Djokovic, known for incorporating the best qualities of tennis icons Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Djokovic himself?

  • Alcaraz made his professional debut in 2018 and achieved his first Grand Slam title (US Open) in 2022.
  • Hailing from El Palmar, a small village in Murcia, Spain, Alcaraz grew up in a tennis-oriented family. Both his grandfather and father had professional tennis careers, with his father even running a tennis academy.
  • Alcaraz's coach is Juan Carlos Ferrero, a former World No. 1 and two-time Olympian, who won the French Open in 2003.
  • In an interview, Alcaraz acknowledged that while his game is reminiscent of Roger Federer's, his idol and role model is Rafael Nadal.
  • Alcaraz secured his first ATP Tour title, the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag, in 2021, becoming the youngest ATP Tour winner since Kei Nishikori in 2008.
  • In 2022, he claimed victory in two ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, Miami and Madrid, as well as two other ATP titles, ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro and the Conde Godo in Barcelona.
  • The Wimbledon final was not the first time Alcaraz defeated Djokovic. In 2022, he triumphed over Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Alexander Zverev to clinch the Madrid Open title.
  • The age difference between Alcaraz (20) and Djokovic (36) in the Wimbledon final marked one of the largest gaps between finalists in a Grand Slam event in nearly 50 years.
  • In a thrilling Wimbledon 2023 final, Alcaraz secured his second Grand Slam title, overcoming Djokovic with a score of 1-6, 7-6(6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
