Himachal and Punjab engage in tug of war over Chandigarh's legitimate rights and power share
Chandigarh, July 03: The ongoing struggle for rightful control over the Union Territory of Chandigarh has escalated as Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu announced the government's determination to address longstanding issues with neighbouring states.
One major concern raised by Sukhu is the state's power share in all Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) projects.
Sukhu emphasized that Himachal Pradesh deserves its fair share of 7.19 per cent in Chandigarh as stated in the Punjab Reorganisation Act of 1966. He expressed dissatisfaction with the denial of this right, which he deemed an injustice to the people of Himachal.

The statement from Sukhu comes in response to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann's challenge to Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa to clarify the party's stance on Himachal's claim over Chandigarh.
Mann criticized Bajwa's alleged contradictory position and urged him to explain the Congress party's position on the matter. He also questioned the BJP's stance on the issue, highlighting Bajwa's association with the party.
Mann strongly affirmed that Chandigarh has always been an integral part of Punjab and will continue to be so. He assured that the Punjab government is committed to protecting the interests of the state and its people.
In response, Sukhu reaffirmed Himachal's demand for its rightful share in Chandigarh and stated that the government is actively advocating for its legitimate rights. A Cabinet sub-committee has been formed to examine the matter thoroughly, and its recommendations will guide the government's course of action.
Regarding the power share in BBMB projects, Sukhu stressed the need for equitable distribution among partner states. Currently, Punjab receives 51.8% of the power, Haryana receives 37.51%, and Himachal Pradesh receives only 7.19%. Himachal is seeking to increase its share, considering the displacement and land submersion caused by these power projects in the state.
Sukhu highlighted the government's unwavering commitment to the welfare of Himachal Pradesh and pledged to continue raising these issues on various platforms until justice is served.
In response to Mann's comments, Bajwa, the Leader of the Opposition in Punjab, asserted that he and the Punjab Congress are firmly dedicated to protecting Punjab's interests. He unequivocally stated that not even an inch of Chandigarh should go to Himachal or Haryana.
Bajwa criticized the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government for allegedly diluting Punjab's claim on Chandigarh and river waters. He accused the government of surrendering Punjab's rights over Chandigarh and not adequately advocating for Punjab's water rights in recent meetings.
The tug of war over Chandigarh's control continues, with both sides standing firm on their respective claims.
