Sangrur, July 13: The Ghaggar river near Banarasi village in Sangrur district witnessed two additional breaches, leading to chaos in the area.

Out of the total breaches reported in the Ghaggar river, five have occurred so far. The district administration has managed to plug one breach, while efforts are underway by officials, locals, NDRF, and Army authorities to seal the remaining four breaches.

Rishi Ram, the sarpanch of Banarasi village, stated that the Ghaggar river developed two breaches on Wednesday night, resulting in a high-speed outflow of water. Plugging the breaches has proven to be a challenging task due to the forceful flow of water.

Surinder Banarasi, a local resident, informed that they have alerted the officials and are mobilizing all residents to contribute to the repair work. Concerns were raised about the water reaching Banarasi and neighboring villages, with the potential to cause significant damage if the flow continues unabated.

On Tuesday night, three breaches occurred at Makraud Sahib, Mandavi, and Phullad, causing problems in those areas. The breach at Mandavi was successfully plugged within a few hours. Apart from the four breaches at Makraud Sahib, Phullad, and Banarasi, locals have claimed that the Ghaggar river is overflowing at several other locations as well.

Ravinderjit Singh, the naib tehsildar of Khanauri, explained that the Ghaggar river embankments are unable to contain the water as its level has crossed 753 feet. This has led to overflow at various points in addition to the breaches reported.

Efforts are ongoing to address the breaches and control the situation caused by the Ghaggar river's overflowing water.
