PTC Web Desk: The escalating costs of living in India's metropolitan cities have sparked a lively debate on social media. An insightful post by Pritesh Kakani, an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, highlighted the financial strain faced by middle-class families trying to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in metro areas.

Pritesh Kakani shared a detailed estimate of expenses for a family of four, revealing that the annual cost of living comfortably in a metro city can amount to Rs 20 lakh. His breakdown included major expenses such as Rs 35,000 for monthly rent, Rs 10,000 for food, Rs 5,350 for petrol, and Rs 8,000 for medical expenses, among other costs such as utilities and grooming.

The post resonated with many users who agreed that the estimated expenses accurately reflected the realities of urban life, where sky-high prices for housing, education and healthcare take a significant toll on people's finances. One user concurred, calling it "the minimum" necessary for a comfortable lifestyle.

However, the discussion also drew dissenting opinions, with some suggesting that the estimated expenses represented a luxurious lifestyle rather than a basic one. Critics questioned the inclusion of certain items like a trip to Asia, owning a dog, and paying car EMI as necessary expenses, arguing that these could be considered luxuries.

Adding to the debate, social media user Akshat Shrivastava underscored the challenges of affordability in metro cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, and Gurugram. Shrivastava pointed out that even Rs 1 crore might not be sufficient to buy a decent home in these cities, nor to send children abroad for an MBA or enroll them in international schools.

This online conversation underscores the financial pressures faced by families in urban areas, where the cost of living continues to climb. For many, the situation poses difficult choices as they navigate high housing costs, expensive education, and medical expenses, all while striving to maintain a comfortable standard of living.
