Chinese bloggers roast European food as 'lunch of the living dead,' stirring social media feast

PTC News Desk: In a recent social media phenomenon, Chinese bloggers have been sharing their honest and relatable reactions to what they perceive as typical 'white people' lunches.

This trend has caught the attention of many, with Twitter sources and multiple reports documenting the bloggers' responses to the perceived blandness of Western cuisine, leaving the internet in splits.

The trend originated on the Chinese social media platform Weibo and quickly spread to Twitter and Instagram, accompanied by the trending hashtag #whitepeoplefood. Chinese influencers decided to venture into the realm of simple and plain Western lunch meals commonly consumed by European and American workers.

These meals often consist of raw salads made with vegetables, boiled eggs, ham, cheese, and fruits. Chinese bloggers criticised these lunches for their lack of flavour compared to the vibrant and spicy nature of Chinese cuisine. Additionally, they expressed concerns about the use of processed ingredients in these meals, which they believe are detrimental to health.

One user, as reported by Business Insider, humorously remarked, "The point of the white people's meal is to learn what it feels like to be dead, but I've taken two bites and it was so bad it made me realize how alive I am."

Another blogger wrote a scathing review of a lunch comprising broccoli, chicken, brown rice, and raw garden vegetables, dubbing it the "lunch of suffering." He expressed his confusion and outrage at the dish, deeming it lawless and outrageous.

However, amidst the prevailing criticism, some individuals spoke up in defense of these simple and minimally prepared meals. They argued that such lunches offered a welcome change from Chinese cuisine, which typically requires extensive preparation and cooking time.

The emergence of the "white people" food trend on Chinese social media has generated widespread discussion and diverse opinions. It has shed light on the cultural differences in culinary preferences and sparked humorous exchanges among internet users.

Whether these reactions will influence the perception of Western cuisine in China or foster a greater appreciation for the variety of global flavors remains to be seen. Share your thoughts on the trend in the comments below.
