Ladakh traffic jam viral video: Massive congestion on Nubra-Pangong road triggers overtourism debate
PTC Web Desk: A video capturing bumper-to-bumper traffic on the scenic road connecting Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake in Ladakh has gone viral online. The video has triggered a wider discussion on the consequences of rising tourist numbers in the Himalayan region.
The video, circulated extensively across social media platforms, shows hundreds of vehicles crawling through a narrow mountain stretch surrounded by rugged landscapes. This has raised fresh concerns about whether Ladakh’s delicate ecosystem can cope with the growing influx of visitors.
Many social media users expressed alarm over the environmental implications of such heavy traffic. Several called for stricter controls on the number of vehicles allowed into ecologically sensitive areas. Some argued that unchecked tourism could accelerate pollution and damage fragile habitats.
“One can only imagine the pollution levels created by so many vehicles. Authorities should encourage tourists to use public transport instead of allowing unlimited private vehicles,” one user commented.
Others compared the overcrowding to popular hill destinations such as Manali that have struggled with over-tourism, with remarks such as “Ladakh is slowly turning into another overcrowded tourist hotspot” gaining traction online.
The Nubra-Pangong corridor has become one of Ladakh’s most sought-after travel routes due to its dramatic mountain scenery and unique high-altitude terrain. However, the popularity of the destination has led to increasing congestion during the peak tourist season, particularly at road sections where vehicle movement is restricted by the narrow landscape.
Apart from causing inconvenience to travellers, prolonged traffic jams in such areas can have environmental and mechanical consequences.
For bikers, who make up a significant portion of Ladakh’s tourists, navigating lengthy traffic queues at high altitudes can be especially exhausting. Continuous gear changes, difficult road conditions and reduced oxygen levels often contribute to physical fatigue and slower reaction times.
The incident has once again brought attention to the issue of Ladakh’s carrying capacity. Environmentalists and tourism experts have repeatedly advocated for measures such as controlled vehicle access, stronger public transport networks and long-term sustainable tourism planning to minimise ecological damage while supporting local livelihoods.
