PTC News Desk: After cleaning a river in Madhya Pradesh and a forest in Karnataka, environmental volunteer Surendra Singh Choudhary, popularly known as Bittu Tabahi, has now started a cleanup campaign along Delhi’s Yamuna River.
On the first day of the three-day campaign, Bittu and a group of volunteers collected 585 kg of waste from the Yamuna riverbank.
The cleanup drive began on September 20, which was observed as World Cleanup Day. Videos shared from the site show Bittu and volunteers collecting plastic waste, flowers, garlands and other garbage from the riverbank.
Bittu said the team spent around four and a half hours cleaning the area. He also said several local residents joined the volunteers and helped remove the waste.
The cleanup video has received thousands of likes on Instagram, with many users praising Bittu for taking his campaign to different parts of the country.
“Flowers, garlands, worship items, plastic were all scattered on the pier. The people around also came, helped, and the whole shore was cleared. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone who came,” he wrote.
He also acknowledged a person named Philip Morris for supporting his work and said Gurugram’s Khedki Daula would be his next stop.
Earlier cleanup drives
Bittu first gained attention after cleaning the heavily polluted Ajnar River in Madhya Pradesh. He later led a team of around 100 people in a large-scale cleanup of Bengaluru’s Turahalli Forest, located near Kanakapura Road.
His work has also attracted attention from well-known personalities. Industrialist Anand Mahindra shared his river-cleaning efforts on X, helping bring wider attention to his campaign.
Bittu’s work on the Ajnar River also received international recognition. He later received a job offer from Boyan Slat, the founder and CEO of Dutch environmental organisation The Ocean Cleanup.
Bittu has previously said that he wants to travel across different parts of India and encourage people to take cleanliness and environmental protection more seriously.
The Yamuna campaign will continue for two more days, making it the latest part of his nationwide cleanup efforts.
