Ohio (US), August 12: An armed man who tried to breach the Federal Bureau of Investigation's (FBI's) Cincinnati field office was gunned down by Ohio Police officials on Thursday.

According to media reports, the gunman was eliminated after a long standoff with police. The investigation to find out the motive behind the breach of the highly guarded area is underway. According to The New York Times, which cited two law enforcement officials familiar with the situation, the investigators are looking into whether that armed man had connections to extremist groups, including the one that took part in the attack on the Capitol on January 6.

In what appeared to be one of the gunman's social media handles, the suspect shared a message just days after federal agents searched the Florida home of former President Donald J Trump and threatened to kill employees of the FBI.

The Cincinnati attack happened the day after the FBI director told the media that there were "deplorable and dangerous" online threats against federal law enforcement.

Around nine in the morning, a man wearing body armour attempted to enter the visitor screening facility, according to agency spokesman Todd Lindgren. State Highway Patrol Lt. Nathan Dennis was quoted by the Washington Times as saying that after escaping, the man drove northbound on Interstate 71, giving police a chase near Wilmington, Ohio. The man was first subjected to negotiations by police, after which they made an effort to apprehend him using "less-than-lethal tactics." Those efforts were unsuccessful as the gunman raised a gun toward the officers. Following this, he was fatally shot by the officials.
