On a day of penalty shootouts when both the semifinals ended in 1-1 deadlocks, the defending champions the Netherlands beat Australia and Ireland beat Spain to set up summit clash in the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup in London. While the Netherlands clinched the tie-breaker 3-1, Ireland were stretched to the sudden death to emerge 3-2 victor in the penalty shootouts. In fact two of the four quarter finals and one of the cross over games went to tie-breakers. Never before so many games of the knockout round have witnessed tie-breakers as it happened in London this time. Ireland had beaten India in penalty shootout to advance to semis and beat Spain today in shootout again to enter final. The Netherlands who had been running through opponents in pool games found a tough rival in Australia today. The Aussies came from behind to overcome the 0-1 deficit and take the defending champions to the shootout with a 1-1 draw. Though the match statistics were loaded heavily in favour of the Dutch but it was Australia that played better hockey. The Aussies not only brought to a virtual knot the scoring prowesses of the Dutch but also matched them in all department of the game. After conceding a goal through Kelly Jonkers in the run of play, the Aussies had to relay on a penalty corner conversion by Georgina Morgan in the 54th minute to restore parity. In the shootout, the Dutch scored from three of their five attempts while Australia could score only once from four to pave way for all European final of the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup on Sunday.-
