After a long wait of 40 years, Asia Cup champions India entered quarter finals of the Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup in London on Tuesday. In the crossover game against the giantkiller Italy, India won 3-0 to earn the right to challenge Ireland in quarter-finals. India's last entry in quarter finals was in the 1978 World Cup where it had finished seventh. Incidentally it was India's first win in the tournament after two draws and a loss. Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup:India makes to quarter-finals after 40 years Led by Rani Rampal, Indian girls created history by defeating the tournament's lowest ranked team, Italy. Italy had beaten two of the Asian giants, China and Korea, in the pool games, But the Italians found India little too hot to handle and cave in. Probably the biggest margin defeat in the history of World Cup in the last pool game against the defending champions, the Netherlands, did affect the performance of the Italians in the crossover game. Still, 17th ranked Italians have every reason to feel pleased with their performance here. India needed a win desperately after holding the defending Olympic champions England to 1-1 draw in the opener it lost to Ireland in the next match before playing 1-1 draw against the US to qualify for the cross over round. It was Lalremsiami that set the ball in motion with a field goal in the 9th minute. Though India dominated proceedings and earned six penalty corners besides getting several good field scoring chances. Leading 1-0 at the breather, India added two more goals in the second half, both as follow up of penalty corner shots. First it was Neha Goyal who found the target and the second time it was Vandana Katariya. India could have added another goal in the last five minutes when Navjot was in one to one situation with the Italian goalkeeper but her powerful shot went straight to pads of the goalkeeper.
