'Attractive guy': Trump's massive praise for Syrian President previously linked with al-Qaeda
PTC News Desk: Previously associated with al-Qaeda, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa has now garnered praise from U.S. President Donald Trump, who described him as a “young, attractive guy.” Following their meeting in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, Trump expressed confidence in al-Sharaa’s abilities, saying he believed the leader “has a real shot at holding it together.”
Trump also encouraged al-Sharaa to follow the example of nations like the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco, which normalized relations with Israel through the U.S.-mediated Abraham Accords in 2020.
The US President has expressed interest in normalising relations with Syria, beginning with the historic meeting with al-Sharaa.
Al-Sharaa, who previously pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda, came to power leading a faction long designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization.
Now, President Trump has indicated a significant change in U.S. policy toward Syria by revealing plans to lift sanctions on the regime—a decision that could reshape regional dynamics. Despite internal opposition within his administration due to al-Sharaa’s past connections to al-Qaeda, Trump has made it clear he intends to move ahead with efforts to engage with Syria.
