Biden secures spot in US Presidential elections, Trump close behind

PTC News Desk: On Wednesday, both Joe Biden and Donald Trump solidified their nominations as presidential candidates for the upcoming United States election, marking a rematch between the two rivals after four years.

Having already overcome their primary challengers, Biden and Trump secured the necessary delegates in states including Mississippi, Washington, and Georgia to surpass the threshold required to become the nominees for their respective parties in the November election.

The selection of a presidential nominee involves an indirect election or primary, where voters determine the allocation of delegates to each party convention. These delegates then play a crucial role in selecting the party's presidential nominee. Candidates must garner a majority of delegate votes during the convention to secure the party's nomination for president.

Following his victory, Joe Biden emphasised the critical choice facing voters in the upcoming election. "Voters now have a choice to make about the future of this country. Are we going to stand up and defend our democracy or let others tear it down? Will we restore the right to choose and protect our freedoms or let extremists take them away?" Reuters quoted Biden as stating.

Challenges facing Biden and Trump in the 2024 election

Both Biden and Trump confront significant challenges as they vie for the presidency in the upcoming election.

For Trump, aged 77 and the first former US president to face a criminal trial, balancing court appearances with campaigning has been a formidable task. His legal battles include charges related to concealing hush money payments to a porn star, as well as facing 91 felony counts across four indictments, notably for attempting to overturn the 2020 election. Additionally, Trump holds the distinction of being the only president to be impeached twice.

Meanwhile, Biden's bid for a return to the White House encounters obstacles, including concerns from a majority of voters who question his ability to serve another four-year term due to his age, 81. The crisis unfolding at the US-Mexico border, exacerbated by an influx of migrants overwhelming the system, further undermines his leadership. Moreover, the tragic murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley, allegedly by an illegal immigrant, has heightened tensions between the two political parties.

Following a passionate State of the Union address, Biden has directly criticised his Republican opponent, accusing him of undermining democracy. He has vowed to resist such threats, asserting his commitment to reinstating Roe vs. Wade to counter the Republican agenda aimed at restricting abortion rights.
