Columbian Presidential candidate shot in broad daylight during rally | Watch
Columbian Senator and Presidential candidate Miguel Uribe was shot in Bogota on Saturday during a rally. He was immediately rushed to a local hospital where his condition remains critical.
The 39-year-old Senator who is running for presidency in 2026 is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Centre party founded by former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe. The two men are not related.
According to a party statement condemning the attack, the senator was hosting a campaign event in a public park in the Fontibon neighbourhood in the capital on Saturday when "armed subjects shot him in the back".
The party called the attack serious but did not provide any additional information about Uribe’s condition.
Colombian Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the shooting and stated that authorities were probing the possible involvement of others. He also mentioned visiting the hospital where Uribe is receiving treatment.
In an official statement, the Colombian presidency strongly condemned the violent act and urged a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
Uribe comes from a well-known Colombian family with ties to the Liberal Party. His father was both a businessman and a union leader, while his mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was abducted in 1990 by an armed group led by the late drug lord Pablo Escobar. She died during a rescue attempt.
