PTC News Desk: As a possible thaw into the India Canada relations was taking shape, he establishment of self-styled embassy under the banner of 'Embassy of the Republic of Khalistan' on Canadian soil could jeopardise the efforts of reapproachment.

The symbolic facility, marked with a sign reading “Republic of Khalistan,” has been set up inside a section of the gurdwara in Canada's Surrey, which functions as a community hub.

This gurdwara was previously led by Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated Khalistani activist whose assassination in 2023 severely strained India-Canada relations will unproven allegations leveled by the then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Nijjar was shot dead in the gurdwara’s parking lot.

The newly unveiled “embassy” openly supports Nijjar and has been launched alongside preparations for a Khalistan referendum being promoted by the banned SFJ. Indian intelligence agencies are closely observing the developments, sources said.

This move threatens to undermine recent diplomatic efforts to restore ties, including a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 summit.

Both nations had shown a willingness to move past the diplomatic fallout caused by Nijjar’s death and the unverified accusations by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, which India has firmly denied.
