France: 145 people pricked with syringes during street music festival
PTC News Desk: French police have taken twelve individuals into custody after 145 people reportedly injected with syringes during the country’s annual street music festival, officials said on Sunday.
The Fête de la Musique drew millions of participants across France on Saturday night, with authorities describing the turnout in Paris as "unprecedented."
Prior to the event, messages circulating on Snapchat and other social media platforms had encouraged targeting women during the celebrations.
According to the Interior Ministry, 145 people across the country were pricked with needles, including 13 cases in Paris. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the incidents involved so-called needle spiking using date-rape substances like Rohypnol or GHB, which are known to incapacitate victims and leave them vulnerable to sexual assault.
But at least three people reported feeling unwell, and "Some victims were taken to hospital for toxicological tests," the ministry said.
In Paris, investigations were opened after three people including a 15-year-old girl and an 18-year-old male, reported being stabbed in three different locations in Paris, prosecutors said.
All three suffered from feeling unwell.
