Canada to be 51st state of America? Donald Trump offers 'missile shield' for Canada
PTC Web Desk: US President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy by extending a conditional offer to Canada regarding America's upcoming "Golden Dome" missile defense system. Taking to Truth Social, Trump announced that Canada could gain free access to the defense shield—on one condition: it must agree to become the 51st US state.
The proposed Golden Dome system, a multi-billion-dollar missile shield currently under development, aims to defend the US from modern threats such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and even hypersonic weapons. According to American defense plans, the $175 billion project is expected to be fully operational by 2029.
Trump stated that while Canada is interested in joining the defense initiative, remaining an independent country would cost Ottawa a hefty price. “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation,” he posted online.
The US President further emphasised that the missile shield would be provided to Canada free of charge—if the country agreed to join the United States as its 51st state. Trump also hinted that the Canadian government is “considering the offer,” a claim that has sparked widespread debate and concern in both countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who recently visited President Trump following his federal election victory, responded to the proposal with a firm rejection. Speaking at a press briefing, Carney acknowledged that discussions over the Golden Dome defense system had taken place, describing it as “beneficial for Canadian security.”
“Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is good to have protections in place for Canadians,” said Carney. However, he made it unequivocally clear that Canada has no intentions of surrendering its sovereignty. “Canada is not, and will never be, for sale,” he declared.
Diplomatic relations between the US and Canada have grown increasingly strained under Trump’s leadership, particularly in light of his earlier tariff threats and now his provocative push to integrate Canada into the US union.
