Canadian police arrest man for murder of Punjab's Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton shooting
PTC Web Desk: A 32-year-old man, identified as Jerdaine Foster, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the tragic death of Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student in Canada. The arrest was made in Niagara Falls, Ontario, according to a statement released by Hamilton Police.
Harsimrat Randhawa originally hailed from the village of Dhunda in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district.
Foster is also facing three counts of attempted murder. Authorities revealed that he was already known to law enforcement and had links to several areas, including Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara. He was reportedly residing in short-term rental accommodations across these regions.
Harsimrat Randhawa, a second-year physiotherapy student at Mohawk College, was fatally shot on April 17 while standing near a bus stop at Upper James Street and South Bend Road. She had just exited a bus after visiting a nearby gym and was preparing to cross the street when she was hit by a stray bullet.
Investigators believe the shooting was the result of a violent altercation involving at least seven individuals across four vehicles, during which multiple rounds of gunfire were exchanged. The victim, the police confirmed, was not involved in the dispute and tragically became an unintended victim.
“She was simply on her way home and had no connection to the conflict,” said acting detective Sergeant Daryl Reid.
The authorities also confirmed that at least two firearms were used in the incident. So far, no other suspects have been arrested, but the investigation is underway.
