Currently serving a 31-year jail sentence in Iran, she has endured the harrowing punishment of 154 lashes, in addition to her lengthy imprisonment. Narges Mohammadi's commitment to her cause is further evident in her 13 arrests and five convictions.
The Nobel Peace Prize recognition comes in the wake of over a year of widespread protests in Iran, led by women advocating for change. Recently, she had shared distressing accounts of sexual and physical abuse suffered by women detained during these demonstrations.
The protests were ignited by the tragic death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody earlier that year. The unrest, which began in September 2022 and spread across the nation, brought forth a range of demands, including greater freedoms and governmental reform.
The images of Iranian women defiantly setting their headscarves on fire while chanting "women, life, freedom" resonated globally and symbolised their determination. The Iranian authorities responded with brutal suppression, leading to a decrease in protest activity.
