Israel implements stricter Gaza blockade; bans food and fuel imports

Israel-Hamas Conflict: Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has declared an intensified blockade on the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip, which includes a ban on food and fuel imports. He described this as part of a campaign against what he referred to as "hostile elements." This decision follows a surprise attack by Hamas, prompting Israel to assert control over communities near Gaza.

Since 2007, both Israel and Egypt have imposed varying degrees of blockades on Gaza, stemming from Hamas's takeover of the territory from rival Palestinian factions.

"We have regained control of these communities," stated military spokesperson Daniel Hagari, though he acknowledged the presence of potential "terrorists" in the area.

Israel recently announced the deployment of special forces to recapture four locations from Hamas after officially declaring a state of war and authorising "significant military actions" in retaliation. The conflict has resulted in over 1,100 casualties and ongoing fighting in multiple areas.

Chief military spokesman Rear-Admiral Daniel Hagari reported that troops were re-establishing control in overrun communities while sporadic clashes continued. He added that efforts were underway to secure and clear these areas.

Israel has responded with its most extensive bombardment of Gaza, resulting in approximately 500 casualties thus far.

In response, Hamas spokesman Abdel-Latif al-Qanoua revealed that the group's fighters were engaged in ongoing battles outside Gaza and had taken additional Israeli captives. Hamas's objective remains the release of all Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
