Life-saving medicines, sleeping bags: India sends medical aid, disaster relief material for Palestine
PTC News Desk: India has sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine, including medical aid and disaster relief material, according to Arindam Bagchi, official spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs.
The medical supplies include life-saving medicines as well as protective and surgical items for dealing with emergency medical problems. Wound care was also considered when arranging the medical supply.
For immediate relief, fluids and painkillers have been included in humanitarian aid. Tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, basic sanitary utilities, water purification tablets, and other items weigh around 32 tons.
At 8 a.m., an Indian Air Force C17 aircraft carrying relief supplies took off from the Hindon airport. It is scheduled to arrive at Egypt's El-Arish airport at 3 p.m. (IST).
Arindam Bagchi told X, "India sends Humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine! An IAF C-17 flight carrying nearly 6.5 tonnes of medical aid and 32 tonnes of disaster relief material for the people of Palestine departs for El-Arish airport in Egypt. The material includes essential life-saving medicines, surgical items, tents, sleeping bags, tarpaulins, sanitary utilities, and water purification tablets among other necessary items."
In the midst of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, India has provided humanitarian help to Palestine. Israel launched a counter-offensive against Hamas on October 7, following the 'surprise attack' on the former.
On Saturday, up to 20 trucks bringing humanitarian aid were finally allowed to enter Gaza through Egypt's Rafah border crossing. However, World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that "needs are far higher" in the 2 million-person enclave.
The WHO official also called for the "safe passage of additional aid convoys across the enclave".
