Known for a unique blend of traditional and modern influences with picturesque countryside Taiwan is now the scene of a heart-breaking story of falling homes, loss of precious lives, buildings flattened. 


In a devastating turn of events, a severe, strongest and massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Taiwan killed seven people, 700 injured and several other trapped. 

The earthquake leaves a path of devastation and sadness in its wake. The death toll is expected to rise.

Taiwan’s strongest earthquake leaves tragic imprint      

  • Taiwan was struck by its strongest earthquake in 25 years on Wednesday when a 7.4 magnitude tremor struck the island's eastern coast, collapsing buildings, killing at least seven people and triggering tsunami warnings across the region. 
  • The tsunami warnings also prompted airlines and airports to suspend flights, which were later resumed.

  • The powerful tremors that rocked Taiwan morning have damaged 125 buildings across the island
  • Taiwan's Central Emergency Command Center reports that over 91,000 households are currently without electricity. Efforts by the government-operated Taipower Company are underway to restore power. 
  • Cellphone and security camera footage captured the moment tremors shook homes and businesses across the island. Videos depicted power lines swaying violently above streets and chandeliers shaking in restaurants.
  • The situation has raised concerns in neighboring China and Japan, although no injuries have been reported thus far.

  • Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi advised residents in the Okinawa region to remain on safe ground until all tsunami advisories were lifted. Japan initially issued a tsunami warning of 3 meters but has since downgraded it to 1 meter.
