The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have claimed that two prime suspects in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi have fled to India via Haluaghat border in Mymensingh district that is connected to Meghalaya.

Addressing a press conference, DMP Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam said the suspects, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Sheikh, crossed into the Indian state of Meghalaya with the help of local associates, reported The Daily Star.

“According to our information, the suspects entered India via the Haluaghat border. After crossing, they were initially received by an individual named Purti. Later, a taxi driver named Sami transported them to Tura city in Meghalaya," Nazrul Islam said.

He said police had received informal reports suggesting that the two individuals who assisted the suspects have since been detained by Indian authorities.

“We are maintaining communication with Indian authorities through both formal and informal channels to ensure their arrest and extradition,” he said.

Osman Hadi was a well-known political leader and a staunch opponent of both India and the Awami League. He had played a key role in last year’s violent, student-led street agitation—referred to as the July Uprising—which ultimately resulted in the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government.

In the aftermath of the uprising, Hadi launched a new political platform called Inqilab Mancha and was gearing up to contest the parliamentary elections slated for February.

On December 12, Hadi was shot in the head by masked assailants in Dhaka. He was subsequently airlifted to Singapore for medical treatment, but succumbed to his injuries six days later.

His death sparked large-scale violence in Dhaka and other regions. Angry mobs torched the offices of widely read newspapers Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, as well as cultural organisations such as Chhayanat and Udichi Shilpi Goshthi in the capital.

The unrest spread to central Bangladesh as well, where a Hindu factory worker was lynched by a mob in Mymensingh, further heightening tensions following Hadi’s killing.
