Who was Fazil Khan, Indian journalist who died in New York fire?

PTC News Desk: A 27-year-old Indian national died in a horrific fire that broke out in an apartment building in Harlem, New York. The deceased has been identified as Fazil Khan.

Who was Fazil Khan?

Fazil Khan was a data reporter for the Hechinger Report, which is based at Teachers College, Columbia University. According to his LinkedIn profile, Khan graduated from Columbia Journalism School and was selected as a post-graduate fellow for the school's Global Migration project.

He started his career in 2018 as a copy editor at Business Standard. He has also worked as a correspondent for CNN-News18 in Delhi. Khan relocated to New York for his education in 2020. 

Indian Embassy in touch with victim's family

The Indian Embassy in New York expressed its support on Sunday morning, saying it is in contact with the victim's family and friends to repatriate his mortal remains back to India.

“Saddened to learn about death of 27-year-old Indian national Mr Fazil Khan in an unfortunate fire incident in Harlem, NY. India in New York is in touch with the late Mr Fazil Khan's family & friends. We continue to extend all possible assistance in reparation of his mortal remains to India.”

New York Fire Incident 

According to the New York Fire Department, a lithium-ion battery started the fire that killed Khan and injured 17 others at a six-storey apartment building called St. Nicholas Place in Harlem. According to reports, the fire broke out on the third floor around 2 p.m. Friday. 18 people were rescued, with 12 taken to a local hospital and four in critical condition.

Several videos and pictures from the rescue operations went viral on social media. Residents of the building who survived the deadly incident were forced to jump out or use the fire escape.
