Punjab politics heats up over blast incidents; BJP sends defamation notice to CM Mann

PTC Web Desk: Political tensions in Punjab have intensified following recent low-intensity blast incidents near sensitive installations in Amritsar and Jalandhar, with the BJP issuing a defamation notice to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann over his controversial remarks.

The notice, sent by BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh, demands that the Chief Minister withdraw his statements from all platforms and issue a public apology within seven days. The move comes after Mann alleged that the recent explosions were orchestrated by the BJP ahead of elections.

Reacting strongly, Chugh termed the Chief Minister’s remarks “irresponsible, baseless and reflective of a criminal mindset.” He criticised Mann for “politicising a serious security issue instead of focusing on identifying and apprehending those responsible.”

Earlier, the Punjab Chief Minister had described the incidents as “minor blasts” and claimed that such occurrences were often seen in states ahead of elections where the BJP seeks entry. He reiterated his stance during a public address in Jalandhar, alleging that the party thrives on creating unrest and attempting to incite communal tensions between communities.

Meanwhile, security concerns escalated further after multiple schools in Jalandhar received bomb threat emails. Authorities said at least five to six schools were targeted, triggering panic among parents and school administrations.

One of the schools, APJ School, was evacuated as a precautionary measure, while the pre-primary section of a school linked to the Border Security Force (BSF) was dismissed early. Parents rushed to pick up their children after receiving urgent messages citing security reasons.

Police officials confirmed that thorough checks were conducted across all affected institutions, but no suspicious objects were found. Jalandhar Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Akarshi Jain stated that investigations are underway to trace the origin of the threat emails.

The timing of the threats has also drawn attention, coinciding with the Chief Minister’s visit to Jalandhar as part of his ongoing public outreach programme.
