Good Friday 2024: Date, meaning, significance, history and observance

Good Friday 2024: Good Friday is a Christian holiday observed by millions of people around the world. It commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, which is believed to have occurred on a Friday, possibly around AD 30 or AD 33, depending on various historical and theological interpretations.

Good Friday 2024 – Meaning 

The name "Good Friday" is thought to have originated from the term "God's Friday." Another theory suggests that "good.” But the word "good" has a different meaning here. The meaning is associated with its religious roots. In this context, it "designates a day on (or sometimes a season in) which religious observance is held."

Good Friday – History & Story 

The tale behind 'Good Friday' is about the day when Lord Jesus was crucified by Romans. A follower of Jesus, Judas told Roman soldiers about Jesus kissing him which should result in the arrest of the Lord, he was rewarded 30 silver pieces for his service by the authorities. The Jewish who were already in anger with Jesus due to his claim of being the 'son of God' handed him over to Romans. The Governor of Rome, Pontius Pilate ordered the execution of Jesus.
Jesus carried his cross to the place of execution known as Calvary. Here high priest was crucified by being nailed on the same cross by his wrist and ankles. The day Jesus was put to death led to horror for followers of Jesus and happiness for Satan.

Good Friday – Significance 

On Good Friday, the entire Church fixes her gaze on the Cross at Calvary. Each member of the Church tries to understand at what cost Christ has won our redemption. In the solemn ceremonies of Good Friday, in the Adoration of the Cross, in the chanting of the 'Reproaches', in the reading of the Passion, and in receiving the pre-consecrated Host, the disciples of the Christ unite themselves to their Savior, and they contemplate their death to sin in the Death of Lord.

The observance of Good Friday typically involves various religious practices and rituals within Christian communities. Many churches hold special services on this day, focusing on the Passion of Christ, which includes his trial, suffering, and death. These services often incorporate scripture readings, prayers, hymns, and sermons that emphasize the sacrifice and redemption symbolized by Jesus' crucifixion.
