1 killed, 3 injured by vehicle carrying illegal boxes of liquor in Kharar
One person was killed, while three others, including a journalist and his wife, were seriously injured when they were hit by a car carrying illegal boxes of liquor, at 5.45 am on the Mullanpur-Majri road near the Majri police station.
According to the police, Dilbar Singh Khairpuri, a journalist of a Punjabi daily, along with his wife, brother-in-law and another person, was out on a walk. A car coming from the Chandigarh side, hit them.
Sewa Singh, a resident of Khairpur village, who was working in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, died on the spot. Dilbar Singh Khairpur, his wife Rajwinder Kaur and brother-in-law Gurvinder Singh were seriously injured.
They have been admitted to a private hospital in Mohali.
Bottles of liquor, which were being smuggled into Punjab, were scattered at the spot. The driver of the Swift car (PB 10 CR 3141) escaped from the spot, leaving the vehicle behind.
Kharar DSP Deep Kamal said the Majri police had registered a case under Sections 304A, 279, 337 and 338 of the IPC against the driver. He said the police had recovered 31 boxes of liquor, which were being smuggled from the Chandigarh side and a case under the Excise Act had also been registered.
