SAD Demands To Withdraw Cuts Lifting Irrigation Water From Sirhind Canal
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has asked the Congress government not to impose cuts on lifting irrigation water through pump sets from the Sirhind canal. SAD specially asked the Congress govt to not to punish Malwa farmers for their own failures.
Charanjit Singh Brar said, “It was shocking that the Congress government had put restrictions on lifting of water from the canal during the paddy season.”
Brar further said that the order during the peak of the paddy season jeopardized thousands of acres of paddy planted in areas which were at tail ends.
The affected farmers in Faridkot, Korkapura, Muktsar, Lambi and Gidderbaha constituencies have already given undertakings saying that they would not avail water from irrigation channels. They had been given permission to use lift pumps to use water for irrigating their fields from the Sirhind canal.
He further said, “Now when the area is parched with it not receiving any rainfall for more than one month, the Congress government has put restrictions on usage of canal water.”
According to the Akali leader, Farmers were left with no option but to spend their savings on diesel in order to life water from canal. It is because they were not getting adequate water from irrigation water courses.
