44% voter turnout recorded till 1 pm in Shahkot by-election

A voter turnout of 44 percent was recorded till 1 PM in Shahkot, Punjab on Monday. Earlier in the day, one control unit at booth number 216 and three Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines at booth numbers 169, 170 and 222 were replaced during the mock poll due to a technical snag. Meanwhile, four VVPATs at booth numbers 27, 28, 132 and 45 were replaced during actual polling. 44% voter turnout recorded till 1 pm in Shahkot assembly by-election After a high-voltage election campaign for the Assembly bypoll necessitated by the demise of five-time MLA and Akali stalwart Ajit Singh Kohar, Shahkot has started casting vote on Monday morning. The voting for began at 7 a.m. and will continue till 6 p.m, election department officials said here. Chief Electoral Officer S. Karuna Raju said that 1,72,676 voters will decide the fate of 12 candidates in this constituency. The main contest is between the ruling Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), making it a three-cornered contest. Over 1,000 security personnel, including Punjab Police and Border Security Force (BSF), have been stationed in the constituency for smooth conduct of the voting. -PTC News
