Kappa variant of coronavirus: After identifying cases of Delta Plus variant from Uttar Pradesh, now Kappa strain of COVID-19 has been found in the state. A 66-year-old man who tested positive for the Kappa variant of COVID-19 in Sant Kabir Nagar passed away.
What is the Kappa variant of coronavirus?
The Kappa strain was identified following the collection of his sample on June 13 following the routine genome sequencing exercise. The sample was sent to CSIR's Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, New Delhi.

It is linked to the B.1.617 constellation of mutations as it may carry over a dozen mutations. Of these, two were identified as E484Q and L452R.

Is the Kappa variant deadly?
As per the government, there was nothing to worry about. It was a variant of coronavirus and its treatment is possible. On being asked about which districts reported this variant, Prasad did not give details and said that it would create fear among people.

Meanwhile, Dr. VK Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog, said that "We cannot lower our guard. A new risk is being seen at tourist spots where a gathering of crowds being seen, social distancing and mask protocol is not being followed."
"This is a serious cause of concern," VK Paul said.
