1 dead, 10 feared trapped as avalanche hits Ladakh

One person was killed and 10 others were feared trapped in an avalanche  on Friday at Khardung La area in Ladakh. At around 7 am on Friday, the civilians were digging snow. The digging triggered a snow slide and civilians got buried. Border Roads Organisation and Jammu & Kashmir Disaster Management Force teams have reached the spot.

The Army and the local police are conducting the rescue operation. The lack of telecom connectivity is making it difficult to get any updates. The Deputy Commissioner, Leh Avny Lavasa, is closely monitoring the rescue operation.

A bulldozer driver told the media that two tippers and a Scorpio vehicle carrying 12 people left towards the area to load snow to Leh. Suddenly, an avalanche hit them and they were buried under the snow.

On Thursday, the MeT Department had issued a high alert for avalanche and adverse weather in the region.
