Delhi: Rape accused kills self inside police lock-up

Delhi News Update: In a major suspected case of custodial death, a man arrested for allegedly raping a minor found dead inside the police lockup in North Delhi.

Reportedly, the family members of the deceased have alleged that he was beaten up by the policemen inside the police lockup. However, the police said that he committed suicide inside the lock-up.

According to the information, the man has been identified as Dharmendra, 40, who is a resident of the Swaroop Nagar area in the North outer district.

On Saturday (September 19), the accused had allegedly committed rape with a 14-year-old girl living in his neighbourhood. Therefore, he was picked up by the Swaroop Nagar police and interrogated.

Meanwhile, a case of rape and POCSO was registered against him at Swaroop Nagar Police Station.

Reportedly, there is no lockup in the police station, the accused was shifted to Samaypur Badali Police Station where he reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself with the help of a blanket tied. He was later taken to a hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

However, his family members alleged a custodial death inside the police station. His nephew stated that his uncle was taken to the police station without their information and beaten up by the policemen. On Sunday, they were told that his uncle has committed suicide.
