Farmer arrested for growing poppy in Patiala village

The Patiala police has arrested a farmer for allegedly cultivating poppy crop at Sadh Majra in Patiala. It has also seized nearly 19 kg of the crop.

The farmer has been identified as Sukhpal Singh. According to media reports, he took half acre Panchayati land on rent to grow vegetables for himself. It came to light on Wednesday after Patiala police raided the village and farms. It has arrested the farmer.

During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that he planted the poppy crop along with his vegetables. The farmer has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Member of Parliament Dr Dharamvir Gandhi defended the farmer and said he cultivated corn and not poppy crop. He further said that he will soon sit on a dharna along with farmer organizations to free Sukhpal Singh.
