A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking direction to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the police to register an FIR against "accused" ministers for their alleged involvement in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence during farmers' protest in Uttar Pradesh on October 3.

The plea, which has been filed in the Supreme Court by two lawyers, also seeks a high-level judicial inquiry under the supervision of the Supreme Court involving the CBI in a stipulated time.

Advocates Shiv Kumar Tripathi and CS Panda said having regard to the seriousness of the killing of the farmers at Lakhimpur Kheri, it was incumbent upon this court to intervene in the matter. They asked that the letter be treated as PIL.

On October 3, eight persons were killed as violence erupted during farmers' protest in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, claiming the lives of both farmers and BJP workers. The farmers had assembled to protest Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya’s visit to Banbirpur.

Who died?

Farmer unions claimed that four farmers identified as Nakshatra Singh (55), Daljeet Singh (35), Lavepreet Singh (20) and Gurvendra Singh (18) died as vehicles mowed the protesters down on the Tikunia-Banbirpur road. Four other deaths were reported from the BJP camp.

The allegation

The protesting farmers alleged that Union Minister Ajay Misra Teni’s son Ashish was in one of the vehicles that ran over the protesters. However, Ajay Misra Teni denied his son’s involvement in the incident.
