In a strong early lead, Vijay’s TVK has crossed the 100-seat mark in Tamil Nadu, indicating a solid performance in the initial trends. Election results LIVE UPDATES: April saw elections held in four states and one Union Territory—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry—and the counting of votes is now underway. By the end of the day, it should become clear which parties will retain power and which will take over.
In West Bengal, where voting took place for 294 seats, the contest is mainly between the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The election is significant for two key reasons: Bengal has traditionally resisted the BJP’s rise, and Mamata Banerjee has strongly opposed the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, which removed about 89 lakh voters—around 11.6% of the electorate. This number slightly exceeds the Trinamool Congress’s winning margin in 2021.
In Tamil Nadu, with 234 seats, the fight has taken a triangular shape. Actor Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is in the fray alongside the ruling DMK (allied with Congress and DMDK) and the AIADMK (in alliance with the BJP and PMK).
In Assam, which has 126 seats, the BJP is aiming to secure a third consecutive term.
In Kerala, where there are 140 seats, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is seeking a third straight victory. However, exit polls have suggested a win for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), though such predictions are not always accurate.
In Puducherry, which has 30 seats, N. Rangaswamy’s AINRC is hoping to return to power for a second term.
