BJP sweeps Bengal, focus shifts to CM f

Following the BJP’s sweeping victory in West Bengal, attention has now turned to the party’s choice for the next chief minister. With Mamata Banerjee set to vacate the top post, the decision will be closely watched as a reflection of the party’s political strategy in the state.

The leadership choice is expected to signal whether the BJP prioritises a strong Bengali identity, opts for a woman leader, or places its trust in an experienced organisational figure. The move will not only shape the party’s governance approach but also its long-term positioning in West Bengal’s complex political landscape.

TAMIL NADU VERDICT: Vijay’s father invites Congress for alliance with TVK in Tamil Nadu

As results for all 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu are declared, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by Vijay, has emerged as a major political force.

TVK has secured around 111 seats, falling just short of the majority mark of 117 needed to form the government.

In a key political move, Vijay’s father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, has invited the Indian National Congress for an alliance.

He stated that TVK is open to sharing power with Congress to achieve the required numbers.

He also remarked that Congress had weakened its position earlier by backing other parties, but now has a chance to regain influence through this potential coalition.

Kishor, who had worked as a poll strategist for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and was behind the meteoric rise of Jagan Reddy in Andhra Pradesh in 2019, was heard saying that he wants to be “more popular" than former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni in Tamil Nadu. “I have to become the most popular Bihari in Tamil Nadu. Dhoni is more popular in Tamil Nadu than Prashant Kishor. Make no mistake, next year, when I contribute and I help you win, then I will be taking over Dhoni in popularity," he said.

Vijay’s TVK surges in Tamil Nadu, BJP leads in Assam

Vote counting is in progress across Assembly constituencies in Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala  and Puducherry, with early trends indicating significant political shifts.

In Tamil Nadu, a major upset appears to be unfolding as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has emerged as the frontrunner. The party is leading in 109 out of the 234 seats. The ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam is trailing significantly with leads in 58 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has secured second position with leads in 69 constituencies. Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is reportedly trailing from his Kolathur seat.

In Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has taken a commanding lead, ahead in 100 of the 140 seats. The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is leading in 35 constituencies, while the Indian National Congress has already secured victories in four seats.

In Assam, the BJP appears set to retain power, leading in 97 out of 126 seats. The Congress is trailing with leads in 24 constituencies, suggesting a comfortable return for Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, results for 10 out of 30 seats have been declared. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy’s party has won six seats so far. The BJP, Congress, DMK, and AIADMK have each secured one seat.

Amid the ongoing counting across five states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to reach the BJP headquarters around 7 pm to join party celebrations and address workers following the results.

Final outcome will be in my party’s favour once all rounds are completed: Mamata Banerjee

Vote counting is currently in progress for 293 Vidhan Sabha constituencies in West Bengal, while polling in the Falta seat has been rescheduled for May 21.

According to early trends, the BJP has taken a significant lead, ahead in 194 seats, while the Trinamool Congress is leading in 93 constituencies. In terms of vote share, the BJP is estimated to be securing around 45%, with TMC close behind at approximately 42%.

Amid the ongoing counting, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has raised concerns over the conduct of the Election Commission of India, alleging irregularities in the process. She expressed confidence that the final outcome would be in her party’s favour once all rounds are completed.

Meanwhile, tensions have been reported from Asansol, where a TMC office camp was allegedly vandalised, highlighting the charged political atmosphere during the counting process.

On the electoral front, Mamata Banerjee is currently leading from the Bhabanipur seat. In contrast, Suvendu Adhikari is trailing in his constituency.

In regions where Prime Minister Narendra Modi had campaigned—famously stopping to eat jhalmuri—the BJP is leading in all four key seats: Jhargram, Binpur, Gopiballavpur, and Nayagram.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as counting progresses across the state.

In a strong early lead, Vijay’s TVK has crossed the 100-seat mark in Tamil Nadu, indicating a solid performance in the initial trends. Party leader Felix Gerald told India Today that the party does not require support from others, describing the surge as clear evidence of a “Vijay wave” and a growing public demand for change.

He said voters were dissatisfied with both the DMK and AIADMK, adding that this is not a routine election but one driven by a powerful shift in public mood. According to him, TVK is eating into the traditional vote banks of both parties and is on track to become the single largest party in the state.

Close Contest Between BJP And Trinamool In Bengal

May 4, 2026 08:29 AM

TMC, BJP Lead In 1 Seat Each, Show Very Early Leads

Both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposing BJP are leading in one seat each in West Bengal show early trends.

Election results LIVE UPDATES: April saw elections held in four states and one Union Territory—West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry—and the counting of votes is now underway. By the end of the day, it should become clear which parties will retain power and which will take over.

In West Bengal, where voting took place for 294 seats, the contest is mainly between the Trinamool Congress led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The election is significant for two key reasons: Bengal has traditionally resisted the BJP’s rise, and Mamata Banerjee has strongly opposed the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls, which removed about 89 lakh voters—around 11.6% of the electorate. This number slightly exceeds the Trinamool Congress’s winning margin in 2021.

In Tamil Nadu, with 234 seats, the fight has taken a triangular shape. Actor Vijay’s new party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is in the fray alongside the ruling DMK (allied with Congress and DMDK) and the AIADMK (in alliance with the BJP and PMK).

In Assam, which has 126 seats, the BJP is aiming to secure a third consecutive term.

In Kerala, where there are 140 seats, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) is seeking a third straight victory. However, exit polls have suggested a win for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), though such predictions are not always accurate.

In Puducherry, which has 30 seats, N. Rangaswamy’s AINRC is hoping to return to power for a second term.
